Les deux sermons « Sur la résurrection des morts et Contre l'ivresse », qui constituent les deux premiers textes du premier tome, sont des homélies liturgiques prêchées alors que Jean Chrysostome était prêtre à Antioche. Dans la première, le prédicateur défend, contre l'influence des groupes gnostiques présents dans la capitale syrienne, la foi en la résurrection des corps. « Contre l'ivresse », unique homélie pascale authentique du corpus chrysostomien, témoigne quant à elle de l'évolution de la fête de Pâques dans la seconde moitié du IVe siècle. En effet, l'Ascension et la Pentecôte, qui étaient commémorées auparavant lors d'une unique fête, le jour de Pâques, se trouvent célébrées désormais lors de fêtes distinctes. En complément est ici donnée l'homélie « Sur la Pâque ». Longtemps considérée comme l'une des meilleures de Chrysostome, elle s'avère composée plus tardivement, entre la fin du VIe et le milieu du VIIIe siècle. Elle présente à la postérité sous le nom de Chrysostome, dans ses deux principales recensions, une homélie au style soigné, expurgée de ses développements de circonstance et lue, selon les versions, lors des célébrations pascales ou dans les monastères. Le premier volume est en rapport avec le cycle pascal, le second volume (SC 562) comprenant des homélies « Sur l'Ascension » et « Sur la Pentecôte ».
